HTC To Release Exodus 1s, Its Second Blockchain Phone For Only $300

May 17, 2019

HTC, a major Taiwanese electronics company, has announced plans to launch a new, cheaper, blockchain-powered smartphone with capabilities to act as a full node for the bitcoin network.

“We think that’s foundational to the whole decentralized internet and just the whole fundamental premise. If you don’t own your keys, you don’t own your bitcoin, you don’t own your crypto,” said Phil Chen, Decentralized Chief Officer at HTC.

Owners of Exodus 1s will be enabled to store the entire blockchain data on their devices, thus making it easier for more people to validate bitcoin transactions and blocks. Moreover, its users will gain more control over their identity information and funds as the direct access to more resilient decentralized networks is enabled on Exodus 1s.

“Running a node is maybe the most important part of the blockchain as it helps secure the network, every one of them acts as an authoritative verifier of every single transaction of the block. For Exodus customers, we’re building technology for the open, neutral, borderless, decentralized and censorship-resistant world,” said Chen.

In October last year, HTC launched the world’s first blockchain-focused smartphone, the Exodus 1, which attracted huge interest from the crypto and blockchain community. The Exodus 1 launch also marked the first entry of the major smartphone manufacturer in the unchartered territory of the blockchain-powered modern smartphones.

Following the launch, the Exodus 1 was selling at 0.15 bitcoin or 4.78 ether. Earlier this year, the Taiwanese company made the phone available for purchasing in fiat currencies as well, reportedly costing around $750. According to Chen, Exodus 1s – the descendent of the Exodus 1 – will cost between $250 and $300. The plan is to have it on sale in Q3 this year.

Unlike its predecessor Exodus 1, the new phone will support a lighter version of the full node, which needs only 10 GB of storage. The full node mode will be available through the deployment of extra SD card to increase the storage. According to Chen, the “bitcoin blockchain is about 200 [GB], and it’s growing about 60 gigs per year”.

HTC is also planning to support Exodus 1s with an Etherscan widget which enables the owners to explore the ethereum blockchain.
