February 11, 2019

Ripple has partnered with 11 new universities to further expand the pool of partner institutions within its University Blockchain Research Initiative (UBRI), the company announced on their website.

In June 2018, the company launched the UBRI initiative with a goal to “support and accelerate academic research, technical development and innovation in the blockchain, cryptocurrency and digital payments”.

The initial announcement listed the following universities:

  • Australian National University College of the Law
  • CITP at Princeton
  • CSAIL at MIT
  • Delft University of Technology (Netherlands)
  • Fundação Getulio Vargas (Brazil)
  • Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley
  • IIT Bombay
  • International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H)
  • Korea University
  • McCombs School of Business, UT-Austin

  • The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
  • The University of Pennsylvania
  • UCL (University College London)
  • University of Luxembourg

Ripple committed approximately $50 million to funding while allowing freedom to universities to determine their own research topics and priority areas of focus.

“In less than a year, our initial UBRI partners hit the ground running with the launch of new research projects, events, course offerings and more. Expanding the ecosystem to a more global, diversified network of UBRI partners will only continue to enrich these projects,” said Eric van Miltenburg, Senior Vice President of Global Operations at Ripple.

The latest addition of 11 new universities brings the total number to 29. The following universities have been added to the UBRI program:

  • Carnegie Mellon University
  • Cornell University
  • Duke University
  • Georgetown University
  • University of Kansas
  • University of Michigan
  • Morgan State University
  • National University of Singapore
  • Northeastern University
  • University of Sao Paulo
  • Institute for Fintech Research, Tsinghua University

“We are excited by the momentum that the Ripple UBRI Partnership has fostered at Berkeley Haas and throughout UC Berkeley in the development of blockchain, digital payments, and cryptocurrency-related research and innovation. In December, we awarded the first round of Ripple-funded faculty and student blockchain, digital payments and cryptocurrency-focused research grants. Also, we are sponsoring numerous student-led activities this semester, including partnering with Blockchain at Berkeley to host a blockchain/fintech industry Spring speaker series at Haas,” added Laura Tyson, Faculty Director at Berkeley Haas Blockchain Initiative.

The program has already yielded some results. For instance, more than 600 members of the University of Pennsylvania took part in research activities which resulted in the school expanding its course offerings.
